Unexpected Gap Year – Don’t Panic! - Africa and Asia Venture

It's A-Level results day, for many big celebrations but for others it's a day of uncertainty as things haven't quite gone to plan. DON'T PANIC...they say every cloud has a silver lining and an unexpected gap year could be just that! There are lots of exciting opportunities out there to turn the next year into the best of your life. Don't jsut sit around, make the most of it!

Here at AV we believe that a "focused" year out is a great way to enhance your CV for University and the world of work. Not everyone will be able to get work experience directly relating to their chosen University course or career path. Volunteering is the perfect opportunity to gain experience and demonstrate skills such as intitiative, responsibility, commitment, time management, team work and also coping with adversity - learn to think outside the box!

Becky Towers did just that and opted to volunteer with AV after missing out on her offer from Cardiff to read Medicine, read on to see how it all worked out well in the end...

Becky was originally dead set against taking a gap year but when she failed to find a suitable place in clearing, she had to rethink her plans.  She decided to use her gap year to do something productive and started searching for a gap year company that allowed her to volunteer and travel with a group of people her age. Becky decided to spend four months teaching in Uganda with us.  "I was able to do and see so many exciting things that wouldn't otherwise have been possible.  I also learned to look after myself and made some great friends.  At the end I realised that there is so much more to life than going straight to uni and getting a job.  If you have the chance then go for it! University can wait.  Taking a gap year is an exciting opportunity."  On her return Becky decided to drop medicine and is now reading International Relations at Birmingham University.

Over the next few weeks we have AV volunteers available for you to talk to -  advice from those that have been there and got through it!

If you would like to talk through your next steps, we're here to help. Please call Anna or Sarah on 01380 729009 or email info@aventure.co.uk.
