  • 3 days arrival and briefings in Ban ThatonGap Years & Volunteering Opportunities in Thailand (Photograph: Scuba diving in Koh Tao)
  • 20 days volunteering in the Fang Valley and weekends in the jungle and old Chiang Mai
  • 3 days of canoeing, trekking, elephants and hill tribes.
  • 7 days of beaches and diving in the
    Gulf of Siam
  • 2 days of markets and tourism in Bangkok

(Thailand Map>>) Your short volunteering project will start from Chiang Rai Airport, where you will be met by our representative, Rosie Massingham.  Your mini gap year project will be in the beautiful Maekok River Valley right next to the Myanmar (Burma) border, which you can see from the base at Ban Thaton. In the hills that fringe the valley are rural villages that have a mix of Thai people and those from the ethnic hill tribes – Lisu, Lahu, Shan, Akha, Mien, Palong and the Chinese origin Chin Haw. Many of the children of these tribes are not Thai citizens and the schools get no funding for them. The schools, though sometimes lacking funds, are the centre of village life.

Your volunteer project will involve helping to:

  • Quote - It was fantastic to get away from the touristy areas. George DenshamBuild classrooms, libraries, lavatory blocks or to provide water supplies, or
  • Build a medical centre, or/and
  • Coaching and organising sport and some informal lessons

Bryan and Rosie Massingham run the Maekok River Village Project and will support you whilst you are in the villages, sorting any problems and providing back up, should you need medical support. Looking after you on the spot will be their Thai linkman and, of course, the school staff, as well as quite a lot of the village and the children - who deeply appreciate what you are doing for them.

Whilst at Thaton you will be able to visit Chiang Mai, the ancient second city of Thailand, renowned for its temples and for its night market! You will trek in the hills, travel down the river on long-tail boats and ride on elephants. Oh! And a P.A.D.I. Open Water diving course is part of the Short Venture, too!
