Tendup Tshering Lama

In-Country Mamas and Papas

Tendup was born in Darjeeling district, where he used to walk anything up to 9 kilometres to primary school each day. He trained to be a Lama (a Buddhist priest) but gave it up to join the Gurkhas in the British Army. Rapidly promoted to officer, he held a number of key jobs in Malaysia, Hong Kong and UK. He lives in Kurseong with his wife Uma - one of the world's best cooks - and both are well known and much respected throughout Darjeeling.
