COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING EXPERIENCE IN SRI LANKA

• 2 days arrival and briefings in Telwatta.
• 19 days volunteering, helping build facilities at the project or helping in the vocational training centre, school or with sports.
• 4 days of diving - P.A.D.I. Open water or, during monsoon, Dolphin Course.
• 7 days exploring the hill country including Kandy, national parks and the Pinnawela Elephant Sanctuary.
• 1 day of markets and tourism in Colombo.

Your Project

(Sri Lanka Map>>) Your short volunteering project starts from Colombo Airport, where you will be met by our AV representative. The Hopes and Dreams project is working to complete a two storey building which will provide dormitories for poorer children and orphans, affected by the tsunami, and improve facilities for the Vocational Training Centre.  When this is complete, work will start on building cottages, each for four orphans and a ‘house parent'.  You will volunteer on these tasks, including clearing the land and preparing foundations.  

If building does not appeal, or there are too few of you to make a realistic impact on a building project, your help on other tasks would be much appreciated and make a difference.  You could help design and make craft articles for sale locally, or teach children to swim, help children with cerebral palsy learn to walk, organise games and sports, or teach English or computer skills to the children.

Joy, Taryn and the rest of the team at Hopes and Dreams will support you whilst you're in Telwatta on your mini gap year. They will help you solve any problems, and provide back-up should you need medical support. 

You can enjoy the beach life of the small but busy resort of Hikkaduwa, with its beach bars and clubs, fine restaurants, or even play beach volleyball or surf.  

You will learn to dive (or improve your qualification), except during the Monsoon season, as well as perhaps bathing elephants at Pinnawela sanctuary, visiting Sri Lanka's amazing hill country and ancient city of Kandy.
