COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING EXPERIENCE IN RURAL SOUTH AFRICA

  • 2 days arrival/brief
  • 20 days volunteer work in needy black and coloured communities in the Karoo
  • 3 weekends relaxing in the bush or on a Tiger Reserve (yes…Tigers!)
  • 3 days rafting South Africa’s longest river
  • 4 days of game viewing safari

The adventure gets under way at Johannesburg Airport, where you will be met by our AV representative and helped with your transfer to an internal flight to Bloemfontein. Your destination is Philippolis, a two hour drive due south of Bloemfontein (South Africa Map>>). Farming provides what little employment there is in this small town of 4000 people but 70% remain without work and the government has declared the town a poverty pocket.

Over the next two days, you will have a lot of fun as you learn about South Africa, the local culture and environment, and the do's and don'ts about living in the bush. Then you will immerse yourself in community life for four weeks of volunteering.  You will dig, build, paint and play – even teach for those that are interested – really, anything that is going on, you will be involved with!   At the weekends, we will help you explore more of the bushveld,   take you swimming in the Orange River, visit Bloemfontein and stay on a nearby Tiger Reserve.

After the volunteering? More fun! Three days of rafting, braais (BBQs - the South Africans BBQ in some style!) and campfires on the banks of the Orange River will be followed by three days and nights in the stunning Amakhala Game Reserve.  Here you can walk, go on game drives to see the rhinos and the cats and eat out under the African stars -camping (with en-suite facilities!).  Then, on to the largest concentration of elephants in sub-Saharan Africa (Addo Elephant Park) on your way to a final night in Port Elizabeth and the flight home the following day.
