Sequoia’s challenge - - Africa and Asia Venture
( Last Updated: 24-03-2010 )
In general, we are very happy with the AV experience Sequoia had. I would say that, from a parental standpoint, it turned out to be more challenging for her than we anticipated (particularly the first assignment in Rukanga) but she adjusted and learned a great deal. Our hopes that she would learn
to appreciate her blessings in life and not take them for granted were realized and she has certainly matured.
I think that the life lessons she learned, that she can endure difficult and challenging circumstances, and that there are many people in the world who have fewer material possessions and much more challenging life circumstances but who may have, nonetheless, happiness, will serve her well for the rest of her life. This is something that cannot be taught, only experienced, and in this regard, we are thrilled.
At the moment, naturally, she is having some challenges integrating her experience into her life and readjusting and this may take some time. Her experience has, understandably, changed her perspective on her home life and has left her feeling, temporarily at least, somewhat out of sync with her peers who have not had similar experiences. She is also, understandably, chafing somewhat at the increased dependence on parents, having had a taste of being out on her own.
Thanks very much for all the support you provided Sequoia and for affording her such a wonderful opportunity. We hope she was an asset to the AV group during her time there and that she worked hard and gave her best.
All the best,
Linda (Sequoia's Mother - Kenya Community & Environment), USA
