Safety and Security - Africa and Asia Venture
We take the support we offer to our volunteers very seriously and place special emphasis on their in-country back up, safety and security. For this reason we limit our numbers each year and spend considerable time covering both on our orientation courses. Staying safe is mostly about preparation, up-to-date knowledge, awareness and commonsense. Putting the appropriate precautions in place should become second nature and we do all we can for you to ensure it does. All our directors and in-country support staff have considerable experience and knowledge of the countries and regions in which we work. Furthermore, all are on hand to provide you with on the spot support and advice 24 hours a day.
We carry out careful risk assessments on every area of your AV experience and discuss them with you during orientation, so that you understand fully our responsibilities for your safety as well as your own responsibilities to yourself and other members of your group.
We strongly recommend everyone wanting an AV experience should get themselves properly insured. Read the small print carefully. Are you covered for all the activities you plan to participate in? Are you covered to trek mountains? How high? You may have white-water-rafting covered for up to grade 4 rapids routinely but are you insured for grade 5 rapids, which you will be able to do on the Nile, for example? Do call us if in doubt.
For EU residents, AV is an appointed representative of Endsleigh Insurance Services Ltd and is able to offer appropriate cover. Endsleigh is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority, which can be checked on the FSA register by visiting its website at www.fsa.gov.uk. We regret that by law we are not permitted to offer this service to non-EU residents and so you will need to make your own arrangements.

Once you know when and where you are going, you should check with your doctor. If you do not have one, or wish for independent advice, a London-based organization, Interhealth, can provide you with medical advice before you go (and some discounted products only available to volunteers) and check-ups when you return. We will advise you on inoculations and precautions that we think are appropriate, based on our experience, but we stress that you should always consult your doctor.
We will also ask all volunteers to complete an online health questionnaire from InterHealth to determine you are fit to travel.
International Passenger Protection Ltd protects you against our insolvency.
Our flights are arranged through Expose Travel Management Ltd (ATOL 5430).
