Rupert – a changed man!

( Last Updated: 24-03-2010 )

I certainly have seen some changes in Rupert!

He looks quite different - more 'chiselled'.  As his friend Gap Years & Volunteering Opportunities in Kenya (Photograph: Rupert and his group in Soysambu)said -" He went out a boy and came back a man". I notice he is reluctant to use his car/washing-machine/mod-cons.... although that doesn't quite extend as far as his computer for some reason.  He walked from Lewes to home yesterday with our dog, a distance of about eight miles.  He was freezing when he came back from Africa and took to cycling and wearing thermals and, for the first time in his life, dressing appropriately for the cold weather.

I'd say he is suffering culture shock in reverse.  He said everything is so easily available here and he is even more aware of the huge differences between 1st and 3rd world.

Personally, I think he'll really appreciate the comradeship and whole experience of student life at Uni and it will hopefully help to fill the huge gap left by leaving AV/Kenya. He may even find the course worthwhile and stimulating ....

The best thing is, he now has close friends around the world and an appetite for travel. I know he doesn't regret a single moment of his time with AV.  So well done.. job done!

Kindest regards and thank you all for making his first big trip so memorable and enjoyable.
