Letter from the pioneers in South Africa

( Last Updated: 14-05-2008 )

Dear AV

We are about to embark on our free travel after an amazing 3 months in Philippolis. Having been stranded in the middle of rural South Africa, chickens thrown at us, singing London's Burning down the street and having kids poo down us (!), we can truly say it has been a once in a lifetime experience!

As pioneers of AV in South Africa, we didn't really know what to expect, which is good because any expectations would have been far exceeded.

SA is the only place where you live in a group as big as 9 and, through highs and lows, we have become a real family. Being in Philippolis has allowed us to see rural, post-apartheid Africa, whereas entering the big cities has permitted us to see the severe contrast between the first and third world ways of living.

We have become so fond of our SA home that 4 of us have decided to desert free travel and return to volunteering in Philippolis!   AV volunteers in South Africa group shot

Much love from all of us here.

The AV South Africa pioneers xx
