Photograph of AV's white water raftingAs your project comes to an end it is not quite time to say goodbye… the 3-5 month AV ventures give you the option to include approximately four weeks of independent travel to ensure a good balance of volunteering and adventure. Across Africa, Asia and Latin America there are lots of exciting and beautiful places to explore, which you won’t get a chance to do in your weekends alone.

Many AVs want to stay on and travel but don’t know if others on the project will too. Therefore, depending on the project, we include time to travel as a part of the project or offer it as an optional extra. This ensures that you experience as much of the surrounding area as possible, know that you won’t be alone and can make the most of your time away. From our experience travelling is often when problems occur, from lost passports to getting ill, so by continuing you adventure under our under independent travel scheme you have the reassurance that if a problem occurs you will looked after be our in-country 24/7 support network. We have lots of tips for places to stay, activities and routes taken by past volunteers. Ultimately it’s up to you; the only rule is you don’t travel by yourself.

  • Wildlife safari in Kenya , Tanzania or South Africa
  • Trekking Mount Kenya or Mount Kilimanjaro
  • Rafting the Source of the Nile in Uganda or bungee jumping over it;
  • Gorilla trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda
  • Visiting the beautiful beaches of Kenya or Zanzibar
  • Surfing on the South African coast
  • Travelling to Cape Town, climbing Table Mountain or seeing the penguins at boulders beach

N.B Please note that for the majority of projects this travel time is optional and that the activities listed here are not included in the AV project costs. There is a small daily charge for the 24/7 back up and support through out this time (please refer to the 16 week project cost). In addition any costs incurred during your independent travel including activities, food, accommodation and transport are to be covered by your own spending money.
