Did you know that South Africa is twice as big as Texas and five times bigger than UK?

Did you realise that most of its 46 million inhabitants live in the major towns and cities and that its vast bushveld is virtually empty? The contrasts are extraordinary: first world cities on the one hand, and communities as poor as anywhere on the continent on the other - a genuine "Rainbow Nation"! This is a stunning and rugged country, where a new generation of talent is emerging from the rebuilt townships - but slowly. There is a passionate desire for education - in the classroom, on the sports field and about the world. That's where you come in!

Gap Year Teaching in South Africa

We work with a small, rural community in the Karoo, South Africa's ‘Big Sky' country, in the southern part of the Free State, where there are five schools in need of your help. You will live in the town of Philippolis and spend three months with these wonderful people (South Africa Map).  

You literally have to prise these children off you at the end of the day - they just don't want you to go home! Our volunteers have found the challenges here immensely rewarding, as our gallery shows. Teach anything (primary to secondary), play anything (especially football), sing, dance, paint and act. Your days will be busy and you'll love it!

Gap Year Sports Coaching in South Africa

With the 2010 FIFA World Cup coming up in South Africa, everyone in Philippolis is currently football mad! A soccer development charity, Lets Play, has donated 100 footballs to make sure every child in the district is kicking a ball. You can volunteer at the local Sports Clinic, helping to improve football skills and organising football tournaments.

5-Week Short Venture

If you are short on time but would still like to volunteer in rural South Africa, why not take a look at our AV Short Ventures. In South Africa, you can become part of the local community in rural Phillipolis with a hands-on volunteer project.

Of course, the football fans have the opportunity of a lifetime to join this project after the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa (11th June - 11th July).
