In the Himalayas! Indeed, there are so many mountains that Nepal almost IS the Himalayas, but the majority of the people live in the foothills, between 1800 - 3500m. Teaching in Nepal, we believe, will help you find the ‘real’ Nepal in these hills rather than the Kathmandu Valley (Nepal Map>>) and our schools are in Gorkha (once capital of Nepal) and Besisahar (where Annapurna trekkers get off the bus).

The schools in Nepal’s towns grew rapidly during the People’s War, when children left their village homes and local rural schools for the better-protected areas. These schools then had to deal with increased numbers but few increases to resources and staff. Therefore, you as a volunteer teacher, will be very useful in bringing not only the interest of the outside world but an extra pair of hands for the hard-pressed staff.
You will teach English, take part in whatever sport is going on, and give your skills to the children. Some schools have smaller schools for the blind, deaf or special needs children, attached to them.

You will live typically with three or five others in a house in the town during your volunteer teaching project. Your landlord will also act as your host. There will be a kitchen, living room, shower and lavatory, and two or three bedrooms. You will cook, shop and clean for yourselves. Each day you will walk to school with your teaching partner and you will soon become well known figures around the town – respected because you have come to help Nepal’s children.
After teaching in Nepal, the whole group will gather in Pokhara for the start of the safari. You will trek to Annapurna Base Camp to see the magical villages on the way and witness these staggering mountains close up! Those who do not feel their legs will stretch that far will visit one of Nepal's amazing national parks.

After that you can either return to the hills of Nepal or you can travel on into India. The latter offers some incredible variety from palm-fringed shores to hot or cold deserts and a history which stretches well beyond the earliest European civilizations.
If you're like 99% of those who have been before you, you'll agree that it will have been the best four months of your life so far. You'll find leaving difficult...and returning easy! We say that "Once an AV, always an AV!" What this means is that you will be joining an exclusive club that will be there for you to help out if you ever get into difficulties and will always be pleased to see you again in Nepal. As an AV, we hope your relationship with us will continue long after your initial time in Nepal.
