Gap Year Sports Coaching in Kenya

Where?

Beyond the grassy Maasai Plains and the escarpments of the Great Rift Valley, and high above Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake, lie the rolling hills of the Uasin Gishu Plateau and the lush mint-fresh tea estates of Western Kenya - where your Gap Year sports coaching project takes place. A mix of Kenya's vibrant and friendly indigenous tribes trading their farm livestock and tea in the region's colourful markets. At sunrise and sunset you will see the dusty roads lined with hundreds of uniformed children in ‘crocodiles' heading to and from school.

On your Gap Year sports coaching placement you will be part of a group of AVs teaching or coaching sport in Kenya. You will work and have fun with the rest of the group. Your responsibilities will be for PE and sports coaching with, perhaps, some academic teaching should you want it, whereas theirs will be for academic subjects with some sports as an optional extra.

What and Why?

In many schools in Kenya sport is not very well organised mainly because of lack of equipment and facilities. Your contribution whilst Gap Year sports coaching in Kenya will be to help improve the sporting ethos of the school will mean a great deal.

Any sports equipment you can bring will help enormously. Think about competing against schools coached by other AVs; organising inter-staff matches; possibly introduce new sports - they will all be loved!

When not on the sports' field you may be invited to help the school in other ways, either in the classroom or in extra-curricular activities.

You will also learn so much that is new. Kiswahili, cooking African dishes, traditional tribal customs, how to travel on ‘boda bodas' and to spend large parts of every day laughing a lot!

Most schools have a basic netball/basketball/volleyball court. They also enjoy rugby - especially those who have had AV coaches before. In short, if you want to teach or coach a particular sport, just let us know and we will try to ensure that you are in the right place!

Orphanages

One of the saddest facts of the developing world is the growing number of orphans, largely as a result of AIDS and, more recently in Kenya, the clashes of the 2007 elections, which left a number of abandoned or orphaned children.  There are many orphanages that you can become engaged with in western Kenya.  They all need help, love, time and money and any involvement is always very appreciated.

Gap Year Living

During your Gap Year sports coaching placement you and your AV partner (we take care to pair you with someone we think you'll get on with) will live in a staff house within or close to the school grounds. This will be your home, where you will live, prepare your lessons, cook, clean, entertain and sleep for 12 weeks. You will become very attached to your new home and love it more than anything you have lived in to date - for some reason, every AV we've had has said so! AV will give you a living allowance for buying your basic needs from the local market or nearest town.

When your volunteering placement in Kenya comes to an end you will be very sad to wave goodbye to your sporting protégés. You will have made many friends and shared their ups and downs both on the sports' field and within their communities. You will have become one of them.

The next phase of your AV adventure is four weeks of travel and safari which should make leaving a little easier. This is your chance to discover East Africa. There's Zanzibar's or Mombasa's beaches; visit the lakes; go and sit with the gorillas in Bwindi's rain forests; climb Mount Kenya; try a camel safari in Laikipia; or how about white-water rafting, quad biking or a bungee over the Nile?

Gap Year Safari

Finally, before you head off home or on to other destinations, we send you and your group on AVs amazing five day safari. See the ‘Big Five' in two of Kenya's best-known wildlife parks and camp under the stars in the bush. Sundowners with Tusker beer and tall stories well into the night...

And Afterwards...

If you're like 99% of those who have been before you, you'll agree that it will have been the best four months of your life so far. You'll find leaving difficult ... and returning easy!  We say that "Once an AV, always an AV!" What this means is that you will be joining an exclusive club that will be there for you to help out if you ever get into difficulties and will always be pleased to see you again in Africa. As an AV, we hope your relationship with us will continue long after your initial time in Kenya.
