Kenya
Kaya Melesi is the Nairobi-based AV representative, who will look after your group. She will meet you off the plane, run your orientation course and visit you in Kenya and Uganda during the project phase. A Kenyan guide will be with you throughout to sort out daily issues, should any arise.
Uganda
Additionally, our Uganda representative, Mrs Shirray Knight, will be on hand during the period you will spend in Uganda.
Kenya
Kenya is often called a cool country with a hot sun and that sums it up well. Your project at Soysambu will be at about 6000ft above sea level, with cool nights and warm days. The coastal region is hot and humid and northern arid areas, where you'll go on safari, are hot (approx 32°C).
Uganda. Uganda enjoys a warm tropical climate with temperatures averaging about 26 oC during the day and 16 oC at night. The hottest months are from December to February. The rainy seasons are from April to May and October to November.
Kenya
There is a network of good hospitals and doctors in Kenya and our Nairobi staff are always on hand to advise. Nairobi boasts a very high standard of hospitals and medical care.
Uganda. There is a good clinic in Jinja run by Dr Debbie Singh, which is a branch of Dr Stockley's Surgery in Kampala. There is an excellent hospital in Kampala for anything more serious. You will be advised on all medical and hygiene issues on the orientation course.
Neither Kenya nor Uganda is expensive. Most AVs say that, of the 2, Kenya is slightly pricier but both are cheaper than Tanzania. Whilst on projects, AVs can eat well for about £5-7 per person per week, which is well within the allowances given to you by AV. When travelling, most backpackers can live quite well for about £17 a day, and travel by coach is cheap. There are ATMs in most large towns throughout Kenya, although Uganda lags a little behind here - certainly Kampala and Jinja and Iganga (if the ATM is working!) have them. You must have Visa debit or credit card. Master card is just not accepted.
You will be living in the bush and any equipment that will make your life more comfortable should be brought. Binoculars and a decent, inexpensive, camera will come in so handy and be used every day.
