arrival/ brief project work in the Tuxtlas rain forests and a long weekend of rafting exploring Mayan culture on the Caribbean beaches as a tourist in Mexico City

Photograph of AVs under a waterfallThe project phase of your Mexican adventure is in the special tropical biosphere reserve of Tuxtlas, some 140km southeast of Veracruz - a beautiful area with jungle, forests, hills, mangrove swamps and lakes. Here, several poor farming communities have to balance an awareness of nature with the need to secure the future of their communities by promoting sustainable development and eco-education.

You will play an important role in helping with this. You will live in a rural community (Las Margaritas, Lopez Mateos or Migual Hidalgo) that will really enjoy you living and working with them for 3 working weeks. They will welcome you sharing their way of life.

Accompanied by a Mexican project leader you will be involved in:

  • Construction and renovating local community projects such as schools, medical facilities or eco-houses
  • Helping construct and restore eco-routes through the forest
  • Coaching and organising village sports
  • Teaching colloquial English to villagers and, in return each day, learning Spanish

During your time at Tuxtlas you will visit the stunning lakeside town of Catemaco and enjoy a 3-day all-inclusive trip to raft and explore the Rio Pescados, Mexico's top rafting river, before setting off on your Mexican mix of culture, chillies and the Caribbean coast.
