Itinerary - Gap-Adventure-Thailand - Africa and Asia Venture
Whether we have booked your flight or whether you are making your own arrangements, the start point will be Bangkok’s International airport. From there (the domestic terminal) you will catch an internal flight in the late morning to Chiang Rai where Rosie Massingham will meet you. Please plan to reach Bangkok by 09.00am.
You will travel by coach to Tha Ton, to stay two nights at the Maekok River Village Resort, on the banks of the Maekok River, where you will be briefed on the project, Thai customs and culture, Thai food and safety issues. You then travel the short distance to your project in the stunning Fang Valley.
You will spend most of the next three working in one of the villages that fringe the Fang Valley, building or renovating school facilities that the community is unable to fund for themselves. One weekend will be available to spend in Chiang Mai (justly famous for its night market) and another weekend learning jungle survival skills (voluntary!) in the nearby jungle-clad hills. Alternatively the village may invite you to a village occasion. At the end of the project you say goodbye to the school and the village, sad to move on!
Your AV Adventures ‘safari’ starts now! You will canoe down the Maekok River, stay with a riverside hill tribe at Ban Huay Rin, trek in the hills and ride elephants to see a Karen peoples’ village, before returning to the river for the final leg to Chiang Rai for a short stay to see something of this ancient city and visit the Golden Triangle Museum (the Golden Triangle itself is now happily a thing of the past) before returning to Tha Ton.
You travel by bus to Bangkok and, after an overnight stop, continue by bus and catamaran to the stunning tropical island of Koh Tao. Set far out in the Gulf of Siam, this is a diver’s paradise. An inclusive 4-day PADI Open Water qualification course with the highly professional ‘Big Blue’ is part of the Adventure. Those already qualified can visit a huge variety of dive sites and those who do not want to dive can snorkel, kayak, windsurf or just chill on the fabulous beaches …and enjoy the occasional sundowners!
By now you may be feeling that we are conspiring to deprive you of the chance to visit Bangkok’s famous nightlife. Not any more! But there is so much more to see in this fascinating city, including the Royal Palace, the river and, further out, perhaps a trip to Kanchenaburi and the ‘Bridge Over the River Kwai’. Then you fly home, perhaps taking some orchids, some silk and some great memories!
