Busesa Poem by Anna Dadswell - Africa and Asia Venture

Busesa Poem by Anna Dadswell - Africa and Asia Venture

When we first came to Busesa

We didn't know what to expectGap Years & Volunteering Opportunities in Uganda (Photograph: Busesa school children)

We were ready for a great adventure

It turned out to be perfect

Uganda is a beautiful country

Of lakes and big green trees

With noisy birds in the branches

And fields of maize and peas

The people are happy and friendly

Shouting ‘Mzungu how are you!?'

We wave and call ‘Jambo!'

As we are moving through

Charles was the one in chargeGap Years & Volunteering Opportunities in Uganda (Photograph: Lessons at Busesa)

Of our days and our nights

He's looking out for us

Making sure we're alright.

Charles lives by African time

And he frequently forgets

He is ‘very interesting',

A joker who never frets.

Ask him about chilling

He will reply ‘My dear it is fine,

Hakunamatata

No worries, anytime!'

We were met by our friend Sam

Who greeted us with a smile,Gap Years & Volunteering Opportunities in Uganda (Photograph: AV Group)

He taught us about Busesa

Your culture and the River Nile.

George welcomed us to the school

He is a kind and cheerful man,

We talked about education

He firmly shook our hand

We started work on the classroom

It was hard but lots of fun

We demolished the first floor

But we had only Just begun!

We shovelled lots of sand

And mixed with stones and concrete,Gap Years & Volunteering Opportunities in Uganda (Photograph: AV volunteers)

Then shovelled sand again

Then mixed and then repeat.

Abel and Conerias helped us

When we didn't know what to do

We all worked hard together

Until the classrooms looked like new

We watched Conerias play football

And Joe and Ed joined in,

Conerias was the man...

They weren't as good as him.

The kids played football too

They were tireless and super fast

They beat us with little effort

We just couldn't last!

The children were amazingGap Years & Volunteering Opportunities in Uganda (Photograph: End of the AV project)

Always happy and full of fun

Inquisitive and enthusiastic

Wanting to talk to everyone

They made us feel at home

And couldn't wait to be our friend

This is an experience

I would definitely recommend

Eilidh painted a beautiful picture

On the door and across the wall

Of animals hiding in the trees,

‘Can you find them all?'

We left behind our handprints

We have had a brilliant timeGap Years & Volunteering Opportunities in Uganda (Photograph: Dancing at Busesa)

The memories we'll never forget

We have made a lifelong tie

Thank you so much for having us

Webale and goodbye

Now that our time has come to an end

We'll always think of you as our friend
