Becky’s fundraising mission..... - Africa and Asia Venture

Becky Mellor is on a fundraising mission for her teaching project in Uganda from February 2010. Here's what she has been up to.....

"I organised a band fundraising night at a local village hall before all my friends left for university in September. I was really lucky as my Sister and my Dad are both in bands so volunteered to perform for free. My family were really supportive and we managed to sell well over 100 tickets before the event between us at £7.00 for over 21's and £5.00 for all my friends. The night was really successful and I rose over £1000, my parent's friends were all extremely generous with many of them giving me further donations on the night or contributing gifts to the raffle which helped me raise extra money on the night.  I made a little speech about what I would be doing in Africa and thanked everyone for their kind support.

Before the event I also wrote to the local newspaper which gave the event some extra publicity and wrote to other local charitable organisations asking them for their support. This led to me getting a further £250 donation from Round Table, £250 from a local town trust set up for young people, £100 from the Lions and £100 from Tangent. Its well worth writing a few letters as it really doesn't take very long and you might be lucky like me and get a few responses. I have offered to go and talk about my experience to all the organisations that have shown their support as a thank you for their generosity.

I also held a Virgin Vie makeup party at my house and raised £100 from Commission and selling raffle tickets. Both the fundraising nights were hard work to organise and required a great deal of support from family and friends but were also really fun and I was surprised at how generous people have been towards me. It's definitely well worth the time and effort, and all in all I've raised £1900 which has made a massive difference in helping me get out to Africa."
