Art, Drama and Music

AV playing drumsIf art, drama or music is your thing then consider sharing your creative talents on a volunteer project overseas.  A chance to learn about music, art and dance in different cultures and languages and be inspired!

AV ventures hold lots of possibilities for incorporating arts and crafts into your lessons or running after school clubs. You could get the class to make posters on the topics you are covering or decorate the classrooms in your school with educational murals covering the alphabet, numbers or even a world map! Materials maybe limited but that is all part of the challenge, and fun! Many volunteers take some basics with them whilst other items can be purchased locally. You will also need to think outside on the box on what materials you can use and what can be made – a good test of your initiative and resourcefulness! The same goes for musical instruments which will be in short supply. In the past volunteers have made home made instruments such as drums or taken out recorders and started after school clubs. Above all the children will love to sing, there may be a school choir or you could run one yourself.

AV teaching artThey will be keen to teach you their songs but also enjoy learning new songs – from old nursery rhymes such as head, shoulders, knees and toes to modern music; add in a dance routine and you will be occupied for hours! Past AV volunteers have run talent shows in Kenya, taught a play in China and organised dance club in South Africa.

There is a particular focus on music and drama on the India Lepchas Venture. Here AV volunteers are actively encouraged to learn local songs and dances in the night school whilst also teaching English songs and plays. Each school has a small stage and the music is a big part of Lepcha traditions and culture. These are then performed by the children at the ‘Lepcha English Language Day’ – a day of celebration for the Lepcha communities.
